HISTORIC ANNAPOLIS FOUNDATION RELEASE:

We are sending this message out to HISTARCH as a public service
to let you all know of the success the Archaelogy in Annapolis project
recently had in converting punch card data to modern digital formats.

The Cardamation Company of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania can run your
cards and email you the results, or even rent you a card reader if you
have too many cards to send. We had four artifact databases translated,
two of them somewhat large (>25,000 pieces). The data was quickly
imported into Excel with no problems.

If you are in need of this service, Contact Cardamation Company.

CARDAMATION COMPANY INC..a manufacturer of data processing equipment,
has purchased the business of distributing and maintaining EXTEK Aperture Card
sorters from CROWLEY MICROGRAPHICS INC. of Frederick, Maryland.
Crowley Micrographics has been distributing these sorters and providing field engineering maintenance for this equipment to government and commercial users since the 1980's. Cardamation Co., Inc. is acquiring finished goods, parts, documentation, software and will take over from Crowley Micrographics some Extek sorter maintenance service. The Extek sorter line includes four models priced from $9,500 to $45,000 each. These machines sort, read, select and collate aperture cards, which include punched data and 35mm microfilm of engineering drawings. Among the users of advanced electronic sorters are ship yards and the US Navy.

Cardamation Compamy Inc. is a leading installer, manufacturer, distributor and maintainer of equipment to process aperture cards, which are widely used by micrographic service bureaus, the Armed forces of the USA and other countries, engineering companies, county and city governments, automotive, aircraft and other manufacturers, electric public utilities, foundations, as well as many other entities.
Cardamation also is the leader in manufacturing and maintaining punched card equipment, for all the many applications other than public voting.

In commenting upon the acqusition, Bob Swartz, President of Cardamation Company
Inc, stated  "For some years, Cardamation has been the leading company in sorters both for aperture cards and punched cards with sorter installations in two dozen states.
The Cardamation MK35, Aperture Card Library System, priced at $76,000, is the most advanced sorter and collating system that has been developed. Since several of the sorters that we already maintain and distribute are nearly identical to the Extek models, this acquisition is an easy fit. Some of the Extek sorter customers are already users of Cardamation equipment and maintenance."

" Both aperture cards and microfilm in general is continuing in wide spread use by astute users who rely upon the security and convenience of micrographics for every day reference to drawings and long time archival storage." Swartz continued,
"Cardamation Company Inc. serves users with short term conversion needs with rentals and card sorting services, as well as those that want to purchase equipment or enter into the long term lease of equipment. Like all our aperture card equipment the Extek reader sorters do not damage the valuable microfilm or crumple the cards."

Chris Crowley, President of Crowley Micrographics, Inc. stated that "Our micrographics, scanner and service bureau business has been growing rapidly."
"Aperture card reading and sorting equipment have been major Cardamation specialties for some years. Cardamation therefore will be able to support the sorter customers with maintenance parts, service and updated products. We are focusing our attention on serving an expanding number of users for products such as Mekel and Zeutchel scanners for government, commercial, service bureau, and university applications."

The computer controlled Cardamation 6580 Reader Sorter (which is like the Extek 7828) allows the records management staff to keep drawings in order, rapidly select desired aperture cards, merge new drawings into the card files and to collate identical copies of aperture card drawings in to order for distribution to user departments, customers and suppliers. Also, this machine has the capability to read punched data to ASCII files in the client's pc computer at 36,000 cards per hour while performing other functions, such as sequencing of cards. This advanced Reader Sorter rents for $592 - monthly for one year.
